Owning or managing a website is a pretty tough job especially when it requires you to achieve something or to be exact, increase sales, gain leads etc. In order to achieve this, of course you need visitors to your website. Basically, people call it website traffic.

Whatever people call it, there are two major ways to gain traffics to your website. They are organic traffic and paid traffic. As the name suggest, paid traffic involves in expending some money to get that visitors to your website. For example, you can promote your website or whatever you want using Google Ads (formerly known as Google adwords), Facebook Ads and many more. In a nutshell, you will bid for certain keywords that are related to what you are trying to promote for a varying prices. Once people click to the advertisement that you have created, then you will be charge.

How about organic traffic? This is the part that every webmasters or bloggers should focusing on. Paid advertising can be costly if you do not manage it in the right way and could lower your return on investment. Organic traffic is the free way to get website visitors, however it is very hard especially if your website niche has too many competitors. The traffics are coming from search engine results when users search for certain keywords. This is where the basic search engine optimization (seo) skills or knowledge play an important role.

A keyword-driven hyper-text pointing to your or any URL of your website. For example, a blogger write a review about your products and put a link that prompt his or her readers to visit your product page. Most of the popular technique is commenting someone’s blog. However, you have to be careful not to leave a comment with your link on a spammy website. Most search engines do not like this and your website will got penalize as a result you will lost your ranking in the search engine. This is the most basic way in order to get a backlink that points to your website, there are more advanced website backlinking that give more impact to your website SEO.

Social Media Shares
This SEO skill is in a hot debate right now by the SEO experts. Some of them think that social media shares of a certain websites does not give any impact to the search engine optimization. In my opinion, I still do believe that more legitimate shares of website link to any social media platforms especially the bigger ones is very important. Why some experts say that? Because there are some services offering to post their customers’ website URL in social media platforms. They have their point here, right?

Sitemap is a simplified navigator version of the website menu. As of now, I only know Google that allows webmasters to send their sitemap to their search engine. Basically, you will create a .xml sitemap and upload it on Google Webmaster. This allows the search engine robot to crawl your website faster.

Ping your website
Pingomatic is a website or tool that helps you to notify search engines that your website has new content. Basically, it is in a form of blog feed. However, a regular website can also use this website. If you are running your website using wordpress, you do not have to worry about this because, wordpress has already has to function built-in. Do not overdo this if you do not want to be flagged as a spammer.

On-page Optimization
Last but not least, developing your website to be search engine optimized is the most crucial part if compared to all the basic search engine optimization skill you should know. You can see your hardwork on this in a long run. Some of the criteria in this part are, broken links, responsive web design, keyword optimization, and many more. I believe that I need to write on this On-page optimization in other post because there are so much thing to cover.

Start working on the five basic SEO skills that I have elaborated above. If doing consistently, you are going to see the good result. Please do not do it like a spammy dude, this will kill your website ranking. Do it naturally.
