When developing a website, most of us beginners like myself will think that a web hosting is needed to do so. Worry not, WampServer is there to help you in providing Windows web development environment to develop your website on a local computer without internet connection.
Develop website on Windows local computer
Depending on situations and the complexity of a website, some web developers prefer to develop their website offline before migrating the completed website to the live server.
Developing your website locally also doesn’t require any internet connection. Therefore your development will be much faster. Unless, requires you to acquiring data from other places out of your working environment.
WampServer for your web development
This software provides Apache2 (your web server in Windows operating system), PHP (your website scripting language) and MySQL (your database software), a complete package for a web server.
Besides WampServer, you also can use XAMPP to achieve this. But for the sake of this post, WampServer is what am I going to elaborate.
Web Server Installation
The installation of this software is very straight forward. It is almost the same like installing other software in Windows operating system. You can download the software here.
When installing the software, just use the default setting, recommended not to change anything. Just click next until the installation completed.
To start using WampServer, double click on the icon which can be found on your desktop. You will see a command prompt popping up three times, that means the web server is starting.
Check the WampServer icon in the taskbar of your Windows. If it is green, then all the required services are starting which means that you are good to go.
If you click the icon, another Windows pop up which shows all the details of the web server you are running on your Windows machine. At the time of this writing, these are the latest version of services that are installed for you to be able to develop website on your local computer with Windows operating system.
Website folder location in WampServer
Which folder in WampServer do I use to install my website? The WampServer itself as in default is installed in C: folder. The directory is as follows:
Your website installation or all your website files and folders must be put in this directory:
Make sure to create a directory which is logically you application or website name in WWW folder.
If you do not know how to install website or any content management system packages, please follow this tutorial. I believe this tutorial might be a bit different especially on creating the database. But do not worry, if you really do not know what to do, I will definitely write a separate tutorial on this.
Accessing you local website
To access your website homepage, just use any web browser installed on your machine and type in:
There you have it. Now, you can start doing your web development on any local computers running Windows operating system. With WampServer, you do not have to worry about having to setup separate web server, PHP and database software. If you ask me how, I will never know how to do that.
